ZAFFICO PLANTATIONSTHE KAWAMBWA PLANTATION GROUPKawambwa

Kawambwa Plantation Group was the first commercial exotic forest plantation to be established by ZAFFICO PLC outside the Copperbelt Province. It was launched on 14th January, 2014.

It is located in Kawambwa district of Luapula Province, located approximately 25km from Kawambwa District Administrative offices along the Kawambwa/Mporokoso road.

The Group consists of two parcels of land both located in His Royal Highness (HRH) Chief Munkanta's area. The first is a 1,000ha piece of land located along the Kawambwa/Mporokoso road near Kawambwa Tea Estates while the second is a 20,000ha piece of land located 10km north/west of the 1,000ha land. The 20,000ha stretches from Kapako area along the old Kawambwa/Mporokoso road on the south west and borders Lusenga plains National Park on the North-West and Kalungwishi River to the north.

Current Operations

A total of 2,491 hectares of land has been planted as at 31st December 2020 of which 1,761 hectares is Eucalyptus Grandis tree species and 730 hectares is Pine Kesiya tree species. It is planned that a further 1,200 hectares of land will be planted during the 2021 planting season in line with the 2020-2025 strategic plan. Furthermore, currently the Group has a Nursery with capacity to raise more than 3.5 million seedlings.

In addition, the group in the process of establishing the seed orchard and as such seedlings are being raised at the nursery for purposes of establishing the seed orchard.

Economic and Social Benefits

The Kawambwa Plantation Group has already emerged as one of the major employers of Kawambwa residents. More than 900 seasonal employees have been engaged to carry out the various activities ranging from nursery activities, fire management and plantation establishment and management.
